Known for their loyalty and vigilance the Saint Bernard is also tolerant of both children and animals.  Because of these traits, they have become a family dog.  They also make good watchdogs, as their size can be intimidating to strangers, though their temperament is gentle.  The St. Bernard dog is a large breed of dog originally bred for rescue and as a working dog.  Adult males will grow to be 28-30 inches tall at the shoulders and weight between 140-180 lbs.  Adult females will grow to be 26-28 inches at the shoulders and weigh between 120-140 lbs.  According to several resources they are one of the largest dog breeds.  There are two varieties of the breed:  the smooth coat or short haired variety and the rough coat or long haired variety.
